We have raised and spent over $10,000 so far. We are so grateful for the financial support we have received to underwrite this effort. Based upon comments at the Farmer's Market and elsewhere, we think people are starting to see that the emergency global warming crisis will NOT be fixed with high rise market rate condos on Telegraph Ave. (They may, however, enrich developers who've wrapped themselves in Green rhetoric.)
How are your contributions to STAND being spent, and how is the suit doing ? Our environmental/land use attorney, Jeff D. Hoffman, is now preparing our brief, which is due in early Jan. Oral arguments will occur in March. We will keep you posted on developments, and hope you can attend the hearing in March. We need your help again to raise another $3000 to get us through Superior Court. We have done all we can to spend your--and our money--carefully. We have tithed refreshments at our fundraisers and paid for flyers and brochures from our own pockets. When the City tried to charge us $7,000 (at a minimum) to prepare the Administrative Record, including transcriptions of Planning Commission and City Council hearings, we decided to prepare the record ourselves. We succeeded even though it was a VERY steep learning curve and almost burned out two STAND members. We arranged for the transcriptions; prepared an 8 page index; had the 1,118 page record in 5 volumes printed, bound, and bates-stamped, and served. The developers' attorneys and City attorney were picky and precise in their requirements, but we met their deadlines and satisfied their standards. We brought the record in for less than $2,000. Now we are prepared to teach other neighborhood groups how to save thousands and not be frozen out of court without the deep pockets of developers. We persevere with your support and contributions. Please continue to underwrite our efforts. We promise to spend wisely and well, for the long haul. |
